Fiber Cement Siding Installation in Sacramento
Fiber cement is a cement-based board that can be shaped and textured to look like cedar, shingle, stucco or stone. Homeowners choose it because it gives much of masonry's fire and rot resistance in a board that installs like siding.
What Fiber Cement Siding Protects Your Home From
Fiber cement is noncombustible and carries a Class A fire rating on its own, which makes it the most common Class A siding choice we install. Termites do not eat it, and it resists rot. It is significantly less susceptible to moisture-related swelling and decay than wood-based siding.
Some insurers discount wildfire-zone policies for fire-resistant cladding, but the discount depends on your carrier, so ask for it in writing before you rely on it. California's Chapter 7A wildfire code applies to many foothill and hillside parcels. We confirm what your address requires when we measure.
What Fiber Cement Siding Is Made Of
Portland cement binds the board, sand or fly ash fills it, and cellulose (wood pulp) fibers add flexibility. Water mixes the batch and cures it. Because cement is brittle without the fibers, the pulp is what lets a board flex slightly without snapping.
Cutting the board releases silica dust, which is dangerous to breathe. Installers should cut outdoors with shears or a saw fitted with vacuum dust collection, clean up with a HEPA vacuum or wet methods (never dry sweeping), and wear a NIOSH-approved respirator when other controls aren't available.
Lifespan and Warranty Coverage
The boards themselves can last 30 years or more with sound installation and upkeep. Manufacturer warranties on the product typically run 30 years, and finish warranties typically run 15 years. James Hardie offers a transferable 30-year, non-prorated substrate limited warranty for Hardie siding, trim boards and soffit, and a 15-year limited warranty on ColorPlus Technology finishes covering paint and labor.
Sacramento's triple-digit sun and day-to-night swings stress paint more than the board. Expect the finish, not the substrate, to set your maintenance schedule. Rinse the walls twice a year, and recaulk joints and trim when the caulk cracks or pulls away.
Improper installation is what puts manufacturer coverage at risk, whether you tear off old siding or install over it. We inspect the existing wall during the free estimate. Overlay suits a wall that is sound, flat and dry, and code and manufacturer specs must allow it. We typically recommend full tear-off when we find rot or an uneven substrate.
ColorPlus Factory Finish vs Primed Hardie Board
ColorPlus is baked on in a factory, so the coating cures more evenly than paint applied outdoors, and your house is done when the last board goes up. Primed board arrives ready for field paint, which gives unlimited color choice and costs more labor on site.
For most Sacramento homes we recommend ColorPlus when a stock color suits you. Choose primed board when you need an exact custom match. ColorPlus siding carries a 15-year finish warranty, while primed siding carries only the 30-year substrate warranty, which does not cover field-applied paint.
Painting, Staining and Popular Colors and Styles
Fiber cement takes paint, and primed board can be painted any color. It is sold in lap, shingle, shake, board and batten, and panel profiles, in smooth or woodgrain textures.
Fiber Cement Siding FAQ for Sacramento Homeowners
What does fiber cement siding cost per square foot?
Installed price depends on profile, finish, wall condition and how many stories you have. Installed cost typically runs $11 to $15 per square foot for HardiePlank lap and $8 to $17 for HardiePanel vertical siding. Total cost scales with wall area, which is larger than floor area, so a 2,000 sq ft house and a 3,000 sq ft house need measuring before any total is reliable. Our proposal is fixed-price, so the number you sign is final.
Which costs more, Hardie board or vinyl?
Fiber cement costs more up front than vinyl. In return it recoups about 114% at resale against about 97% for vinyl, and it does not melt in heat.
What are the downsides and most common problems?
Fiber cement has four real drawbacks:
Weight: the boards are heavy, which raises labor cost.
Cut edges: raw cut edges absorb moisture unless sealed.
Caulk: joints need recaulking over time.
Cracking: boards can crack from impact or poor nailing, and a stray hit with a ladder or mower can break a corner.
The most frequent problem we see is failed caulk and unsealed cut edges, both avoidable at installation.
Does fiber cement improve energy efficiency?
Fiber cement adds almost no R-value by itself. Comfort and energy savings come from the wall insulation and weather barrier behind it, which we can upgrade during a replacement.
Do I need a permit in California?
Requirements vary by jurisdiction and scope. When a permit is required, we handle the permitting process through the City of Sacramento or your county.

Last year, GVD did a complete demolition/remodel of a guest bathroom for me. This year they did a demolition/remodel of a master bathroom suite and a renovation of another guest bathroom. We went with fiberglass Milgard windows for replacing our single pane original windows from when the house was built (1960’s) The entire process from quote to completion was exceptional. The Sales Rep Patrick Monahan was helpful in breaking down the differences in all the different options and brought up pros and cons of different products from soffit vs none as well as differences in window material vinyl vs fiberglass without a high pressure sales tactic. The project started quickly after signing and my wife and I were blown away by the work ethic. Our Project Manager Vadim was always available and prompt with responses. There were multiple times he was able to give us peace of mind and that type of service is really helpful in today’s world with a project so large for us. The crew that did the work came from Sacramento to Livermore and started the day at 8am and worked until 8pm. Everyday. That was wild to me. The crew was absolutely the hardest working crew I’ve ever seen and we had many different contractors in the recent months. I’m not sure if this is standard for GVD, your mileage may vary in this regard, but I was highly impressed. Upon completion there was a issue with one of the windows from the manufacturer and Vadim was able to get a replacement request issued a day after I told him. We have now experienced our first rain and there was an area the water was bypassing the gutter and again our project manager Vadim was quick to assess and address. If your looking for siding or windows get a few quotes obviously but I highly recommend this company. Kudos to the entire team’s professionalism, hard work, and attention.”

“Superior craftsmanship, solid work ethic, excellent products - along with professionalism and friendliness….. GVD did it again! Last year, GVD did a complete demolition/remodel of a guest bathroom for me. This year they did a demolition/remodel of a master bathroom suite and a renovation of another guest bathroom. GVD transformed the old 1991 bathroom suite with a massive Jacuzzi tub, deteriorating shower, outdated tile, old lighting and plumbing fixtures, clunky cabinets, and worn countertops. It is now a lovely suite with a sleek soaker tub, modern plumbing and light fixtures, beautiful tile, gorgeous cabinets, a wall that is entirely mirror above the sinks, new windows and a new exterior deck door with screen. It has gone from a heavy, over tiled, bulky room to a lovely, light and airy, calm and inviting space. It is actually quite stunning. I can’t adequately describe how thrilled I am with all three of my GVD bathrooms and the entire remodeling experience. From the initial contacts with estimator Gary and design consultant Danielle to project managers Ross and Serge, it has been such a smooth and seamless experience. My heart felt thanks goes to every single person and each professional workman who contributed to the projects. The carpenters, plumber, electricians, glaziers, tile cutters, painter, drywallers, and door and window installers were highly skilled and professional in their areas of expertise.
