A bathroom conversion swaps your tub, shower or surround for a new one while leaving the plumbing locations, walls and vanity in place. Because no demolition of the whole room is involved, you pay for the fixture and installation rather than a rebuilt room.
People usually ask for one for one of two reasons. Some no longer take long baths and want a faster, easier-to-clean shower. Others worry about a child, a parent or themselves slipping while stepping over a high tub wall, and a low-threshold walk-in shower removes that step.
Should You Replace a Tub With a Shower?
Yes, if nobody in the household bathes in the tub. A shower is quicker to use, cleans faster and takes a smaller step to enter. Keep the tub if you have young children or plan to sell to families, since buyers with small kids often look for at least one tub in the house.

A prefab pan is cheaper than tile because the factory builds the waterproof base and walls as a unit, so installers spend less labor on waterproofing and tile setting. Shower Stall vs Walk-In Shower
A shower stall is a prefabricated enclosure with walls on three sides and a door or curtain, while a walk-in shower is open, with a glass panel or no door and little or no curb. A stall costs less and installs faster. A walk-in shower feels larger and is easier to enter with a walker, but it needs careful waterproofing and floor slope.
Walk-In Shower or Walk-In Tub for Seniors
A walk-in shower suits most older adults because there is nothing to wait for. A walk-in tub requires you to sit inside while it fills and drains, which can be cold and awkward for some users. Choose the tub only if the person needs soaking for pain relief, and pair it with a shower for daily use.
Seniors and Walk-In Showers
Original Medicare does not generally pay for a walk-in shower. It treats bathroom changes as home improvements, not as medical equipment. A doctor's recommendation rarely changes that. Funding usually comes from other sources, so check each one for your situation before you sign.
Two options are worth checking. One is California's Medi-Cal home and community-based waiver programs. The other is your local Area Agency on Aging. Veterans can also check the VA's Home Improvements and Structural Alterations grant. Bathroom Conversion Cost in Sacramento and How to Budget
Conversion costs depend on the system you choose, how much of the existing plumbing stays, and what the walls hide. Tub-to-shower conversions, walk-in shower conversions and ADA-compliant showers each carry a different price range.
Use your home's value and your neighborhood as a guide, whether you pay in cash or borrow, so you do not over-improve.
For a small bathroom, put money into the shower and waterproofing first, and keep the existing vanity and toilet layout, because replacing fixtures in the same footprint avoids new plumbing runs, and new plumbing runs are what usually break small-bathroom budgets.
Ventilation is one place not to cut corners. A 4-inch duct of 10 to 15 feet with two elbows delivers about 15% to 30% less airflow than the fan's rating, and adding a new duct through a wall or roof costs $250 to $950+ in Sacramento. Wall routes cost less than roof routes because roof work needs flashing and attic access.

Sequence matters because each trade covers the work of the one before it, so a step done out of order forces someone to tear out finished work. The standard order, which most remodels follow when a permit applies, is:
Demolish the old fixtures, tile and any damaged subfloor.
Frame any wall or floor changes.
Run rough plumbing, electrical and the exhaust duct.
Pass the rough inspection, where a permit applies.
Hang drywall or cement board and waterproof the shower.
Set the base, tile and flooring.
Install the vanity, toilet and fixtures.
Paint, caulk and finish trim.
Common Bathroom Remodel Mistakes to Avoid
These mistakes cost the most to reverse once the walls are closed:
Skipping waterproofing behind tile, which leaks into framing.
Ordering fixtures before measuring the alcove, so a unit does not fit.
Undersizing the exhaust fan, which lets moisture return to the walls.
Moving plumbing without checking whether a permit applies.
Hiring an unlicensed contractor, which leaves you without recourse.
Permits and Timelines in Sacramento
A liner over an existing tub often needs no permit because it changes no plumbing or structure. Moving drains, relocating walls or adding electrical work usually does need one. When a permit is required, we handle the process through the City of Sacramento Community Development Department or the relevant county. The City of Sacramento's published first-round plan review targets are about 12 working days for residential remodels, 15 for additions and 20 for new homes, with shorter targets for resubmittals.
Living at Home During the Work
You can stay home during a liner conversion, which often finishes in a day. A full makeover takes the bathroom out of service for the project's duration, so plan to use a second bathroom if you have one. Garage-to-bathroom or ADU additions are separate projects with their own permits.

“We hired GVD for our siding and windows project. We went with James Hardie when it was time to replace our stucco due to its product rating as well as me not wanting to deal with cracking stucco over time. We went with fiberglass Milgard windows for replacing our single pane original windows from when the house was built (1960’s) The entire process from quote to completion was exceptional. The Sales Rep Patrick Monahan was helpful in breaking down the differences in all the different options and brought up pros and cons of different products from soffit vs none as well as differences in window material vinyl vs fiberglass without a high pressure sales tactic. The project started quickly after signing and my wife and I were blown away by the work ethic. Our Project Manager Vadim was always available and prompt with responses. There were multiple times he was able to give us peace of mind and that type of service is really helpful in today’s world with a project so large for us. The crew that did the work came from Sacramento to Livermore and started the day at 8am and worked until 8pm. Everyday. That was wild to me. The crew was absolutely the hardest working crew I’ve ever seen and we had many different contractors in the recent months. I’m not sure if this is standard for GVD, your mileage may vary in this regard, but I was highly impressed. Upon completion there was a issue with one of the windows from the manufacturer and Vadim was able to get a replacement request issued a day after I told him. We have now experienced our first rain and there was an area the water was bypassing the gutter and again our project manager Vadim was quick to assess and address. If your looking for siding or windows get a few quotes obviously but I highly recommend this company. Kudos to the entire team’s professionalism, hard work, and attention.”

Last year, GVD did a complete demolition/remodel of a guest bathroom for me. This year they did a demolition/remodel of a master bathroom suite and a renovation of another guest bathroom. GVD transformed the old 1991 bathroom suite with a massive Jacuzzi tub, deteriorating shower, outdated tile, old lighting and plumbing fixtures, clunky cabinets, and worn countertops. It is now a lovely suite with a sleek soaker tub, modern plumbing and light fixtures, beautiful tile, gorgeous cabinets, a wall that is entirely mirror above the sinks, new windows and a new exterior deck door with screen. It has gone from a heavy, over tiled, bulky room to a lovely, light and airy, calm and inviting space. It is actually quite stunning.
