If you miss soaking, or you need a place to bathe young kids, a shower to tub conversion puts a 60-inch alcove tub where your shower stall is now. We run the plumbing, framing, waterproofing and tile as one project, and we handle any required permits.

Our current special takes $1,500 off a kitchen or bathroom remodel. Request a free, no-obligation quote and an in-home consultation with a designer. You receive a detailed fixed-price proposal with the full scope and a firm total, so the number you approve is the number you pay.
In most cases, yes: you can add a bathtub to an existing shower. A standard alcove tub measures 60 by 30 inches, and because many shower stalls are close to that footprint, a 60-inch stall usually converts without taking space from the room.
Smaller stalls are the exception, since a 36-inch square stall cannot hold a full-length tub and a compact bathroom may need a shorter soaking model or a layout change. We measure the alcove, the door swing and the floor during the free estimate before we recommend a tub.
The work follows a fixed order, which is why a firm schedule is possible, and each step below depends on the one before it:
Measure the alcove and confirm the tub size, drain position and floor condition.
Remove the shower pan, surround and valve.
Reframe the walls and floor as needed to carry the tub.
Move the drain and rough in the new valve and spout.
Set the tub, then waterproof and tile or panel the surround.
Test the plumbing and complete the final walkthrough.
A shower drain is in the middle of the stall, while a tub drain is at one end, under the overflow. Because the two positions differ, converting usually means cutting the floor open and re-routing the drain line, and in a house on a slab that means breaking concrete.
The valve and spout also move. A tub needs a spout low on the wall and a showerhead higher up if you want a combo, so the supply lines are reworked. A licensed contractor coordinates this, since plumbers install the pipes but rarely handle the framing and tile that surround them.
A filled tub with a bather weighs far more than an empty stall, and older Sacramento homes often have floors over crawlspaces with aging joists. We inspect the framing and add support where the floor flexes, which is cheaper to do now than after tile cracks.
Waterproofing changes too. A tub surround needs cement board or a waterproof membrane over blocking at the tub rim, with the seam between tub and wall sealed. Full-wall panels with no grout lines remove the joints where moisture gets behind the wall.
The tub you pick determines how much plumbing and floor work follows, so choose the type before you commit to a budget.
| Tub type | Typical footprint, inches | Drain move needed | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alcove | 60 x 30 | Yes | Standard 60-inch stall |
| Soaking | 60 to 72 x 30 to 36 | Yes | Deep baths, longer alcoves |
| Walk-in | 52 to 60 x 30 | Yes | Limited mobility |
| Freestanding | 55 to 70 long | Yes, floor-mounted | Larger bathrooms only |
An alcove tub is the fit for most 60-inch stalls. A freestanding tub needs clear floor on all sides and rarely fits where a stall stood. Acrylic tubs are light and warm to the touch, while cast iron holds heat longer but weighs far more and puts extra load on the floor.
Your price depends on tub type, drain location, floor condition and surround material, so we quote a firm total after measuring. A conversion with no drain move and no floor repair costs less than one needing both.
A $10,000 budget may cover a basic conversion with no drain move, but not a full bathroom remodel or a layout change.
Whether a conversion needs a permit depends on the scope, and a permit adds its own fees. A like-for-like fixture swap may need no permit, but moving a drain usually requires a plumbing permit, and changing framing usually triggers review. When a permit is required, we handle the permitting process, whether through the City of Sacramento or Sacramento County.
A full master bath remodel takes 5 to 8 weeks of active construction in Sacramento. A conversion alone is smaller and takes less time, and your project manager sets the schedule with your proposal. Choosing the tub and finishes before demolition keeps the schedule firm, since custom materials can add lead time.
Whether a tub conversion pays back when you sell depends mostly on whether the house keeps at least one tub. Buyers with young children often search for a home with at least one tub, and many agents advise keeping one. If you have only one bathroom, a tub protects your resale pool. If you have a second bath with a tub, a walk-in shower in the master is unlikely to hurt.
The 2025 Cost vs. Value Report puts a bath remodel's resale return nationally between 42% and 80%. Most of that return comes from a clean, current, well-built room rather than extravagant fixtures.
Your installation options are a big-box retailer, a kit you fit yourself, or a contractor you hire directly. Big-box retailers such as Lowe's and Home Depot sell alcove tubs, surround kits and installation through partner installers. Pricing varies by store and scope: $3,200 to $14,000+. Kits suit a swap where the drain already lines up.
DIY becomes risky once the drain moves or the floor needs support, because a hidden leak rots framing before it shows. Check any installer's license on the California Contractors State License Board lookup. Ours is #989637.
