In hot, dry climates like Sacramento's, both species hold up when sealed against UV. Thermally modified wood is a further option for storefronts and sun-baked walls because heat treatment reduces its moisture uptake.

Pick the profile for the architecture of your house, and pick the species for the climate. Species and how well you keep the finish up decide how long the wall lasts, while the profile mainly decides how it looks.
Why Choose Wood Siding Over Other Materials
The remaining question is whether wood is the right material at all. Wood takes paint and stain readily. One species can therefore give a warm rustic look in honey tones or a contemporary one in pale, cool finishes. Older homes often depend on authentic wood, because their original construction was designed for it. Substituting another material can change how the walls handle moisture.
The tradeoff is upkeep. Wood needs regular refinishing, and it can attract pests when it is left unsealed, though cedar's natural oils deter termites.
Wood Siding Is Easy to Repair and Replace
A damaged board can be cut out and replaced without tearing off the whole wall. We match the species, profile, and finish so the repair blends into the existing siding. Fiber cement and vinyl are harder to patch invisibly once a section is damaged.
Cedar Siding Lifespan, Cost, and Downsides
Cedar can last 20 to 40 years when it is sealed and refinished on schedule. Its downsides are real: it fades to silver-gray if left unfinished, it dents more easily than fiber cement, and it burns, which matters in wildfire areas.
Wall area differs from floor area, so for a 2,000 sq ft house we measure the walls on site and price the job from that measurement.
Wood vs Vinyl vs Fiber Cement
Wood siding runs about $8 to $13 per square foot installed (as of October 2026), more than vinyl to install and maintain. The 2025 Cost vs. Value Report shows fiber cement siding replacement recouping about 114% of cost at resale (about $24,420 in added value), while vinyl recoups about 97%.
James Hardie fiber cement carries a Class A fire rating on its own, which is why it is the most common Class A siding we install. It is also significantly less susceptible to moisture-related swelling and decay than wood-based siding products. We install it as a James Hardie Elite Contractor, and in 2025 we won the James Hardie Service Excellence Award, the only siding company in California to receive the honor.
Vinyl does not provide the same fire resistance as fiber cement, which carries a Class A rating. LP SmartSide engineered wood is combustible on its own, but it is CAL FIRE-listed for California WUI zones when it is installed as part of a qualifying fire-rated wall assembly, which we build where code calls for it. We hold LP Master Level Preferred Contractor status.
Fire Resistance and California Wildfire Code for Wood Siding
California Building Code Chapter 7A sets exterior wall requirements in wildfire-prone areas, and untreated cedar and redwood are combustible. Foothill and Tahoe properties often fall in these zones. In those areas we steer you toward a compliant wall assembly or a listed product.
Wood Siding Installation Steps and Timeline
We start with the free inspection, then decide whether overlay or full tear-off suits your walls. Overlay works when the existing wall is sound, flat, and dry, and code and manufacturer specs allow it. Tear-off is typically recommended for rot or an uneven surface.

The Sales Rep Patrick Monahan was helpful in breaking down the differences in all the different options and brought up pros and cons of different products from soffit vs none as well as differences in window material vinyl vs fiberglass without a high pressure sales tactic. Last year, GVD did a complete demolition/remodel of a guest bathroom for me. This year they did a demolition/remodel of a master bathroom suite and a renovation of another guest bathroom. GVD transformed the old 1991 bathroom suite with a massive Jacuzzi tub, deteriorating shower, outdated tile, old lighting and plumbing fixtures, clunky cabinets, and worn countertops. “We hired GVD for our siding and windows project. We went with James Hardie when it was time to replace our stucco due to its product rating as well as me not wanting to deal with cracking stucco over time. We went with fiberglass Milgard windows for replacing our single pane original windows from when the house was built (1960’s) The entire process from quote to completion was exceptional. The Sales Rep Patrick Monahan was helpful in breaking down the differences in all the different options and brought up pros and cons of different products from soffit vs none as well as differences in window material vinyl vs fiberglass without a high pressure sales tactic. The project started quickly after signing and my wife and I were blown away by the work ethic. Our Project Manager Vadim was always available and prompt with responses. There were multiple times he was able to give us peace of mind and that type of service is really helpful in today’s world with a project so large for us. The crew that did the work came from Sacramento to Livermore and started the day at 8am and worked until 8pm. Everyday. That was wild to me. The crew was absolutely the hardest working crew I’ve ever seen and we had many different contractors in the recent months. I’m not sure if this is standard for GVD, your mileage may vary in this regard, but I was highly impressed. Upon completion there was a issue with one of the windows from the manufacturer and Vadim was able to get a replacement request issued a day after I told him. We have now experienced our first rain and there was an area the water was bypassing the gutter and again our project manager Vadim was quick to assess and address. If your looking for siding or windows get a few quotes obviously but I highly recommend this company. Kudos to the entire team’s professionalism, hard work, and attention.”

Last year, GVD did a complete demolition/remodel of a guest bathroom for me. This year they did a demolition/remodel of a master bathroom suite and a renovation of another guest bathroom. GVD transformed the old 1991 bathroom suite with a massive Jacuzzi tub, deteriorating shower, outdated tile, old lighting and plumbing fixtures, clunky cabinets, and worn countertops. It is now a lovely suite with a sleek soaker tub, modern plumbing and light fixtures, beautiful tile, gorgeous cabinets, a wall that is entirely mirror above the sinks, new windows and a new exterior deck door with screen. It has gone from a heavy, over tiled, bulky room to a lovely, light and airy, calm and inviting space. It is actually quite stunning. I can’t adequately describe how thrilled I am with all three of my GVD bathrooms and the entire remodeling experience.
