What Are Awning Windows Best For?
Awning windows are best for small, short or high openings that need ventilation in any weather. Because the sash tilts out from the bottom, you can leave it open during a winter rain, which a slider or double hung cannot do without letting water in.
They are wider than they are tall, so they fit the short walls where a standard window will not: above a kitchen counter or sink, over a bathtub or vanity, in a laundry room, along a stairwell, or high on a wall where you want light and privacy. A crank is also easier to reach over a counter than a sash you have to lift.

Where Should You Place Awning Windows?
Put them in the rooms that make moisture or odors: kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms and basements. Each benefits from steady airflow, and each often has a short wall where a wide window will not fit.
Awnings also combine well with other windows. A common layout is an awning under or above a fixed picture window, so the large glass stays clear while the awning vents. You can also stack two or three awnings vertically for a tall, modern band of glass that still opens.
Use care in bedrooms. The outward-swinging sash and its hinge arms reduce the clear opening you would climb through in an emergency, which we cover below.
Awning vs Casement Windows
An awning hinges at the top and a casement hinges at the side; otherwise they share the same crank, compression seals and outward swing.

Choose an awning for wet-weather ventilation and short walls, and a casement window for bedrooms and for catching cross breezes. Many Sacramento homes use both.
Which Awning Windows Work in Sacramento Heat?
Sacramento's triple-digit summers and cool nights put the most stress on frames and glass, so we mostly install vinyl and composite awning windows with dual-pane low-E glass.
Vinyl and composite frames
Vinyl does not need painting, does not rot or swell in a steamy bathroom or kitchen, and cleans with a hose and a soft cloth. Composite frames, such as Andersen's Fibrex material, cost more and are stiffer. Wood-interior windows suit stained trim but need interior finish care.
Glass and seals
When the crank pulls the sash closed, it presses the sash against compression seals, which holds out drafts better than the sliding seals on a slider. Pick a low solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) on west and south walls, and check the NFRC label on the exact unit you are quoted. A lower U-factor means better insulation.
As one example, Anlin lists its Coronado awning window at a U-factor of 0.27 with an SHGC of 0.18 on its standard glass and 0.14 on its SunMatrix glass. Anlin backs the line with a Limited Double Lifetime Warranty covering parts, labor and accidental glass breakage, which transfers to the next owner if you sell.
Title 24, rebates and tax credits
California's Title 24 energy code limits replacement windows in Sacramento's Climate Zone 12 to a U-factor of 0.27 and an SHGC of 0.23, or 0.40 and 0.35 when you replace 75 square feet of windows or less. The federal window tax credit ended for windows placed in service after December 31, 2025, and SMUD does not currently list a residential window rebate, so check SMUD or PG&E for any current offers.

Andersen 100 Series: Fibrex composite, up to 4 feet wide and 3 feet high.
Andersen 400 Series: wood interior with a vinyl exterior, up to 6 feet wide and 3 feet high, with an optional power operator for high openings.
Andersen A-Series and E-Series: premium lines; A-Series awnings go up to 6 feet wide and 4 feet high, E-Series up to 4 by 4 feet.

What Sizes Do Awning Windows Come In?
Awning windows are made wider than they are tall, and each manufacturer publishes its own size chart. Andersen's awning lines, for example, top out between 4 and 6 feet wide and 3 to 4 feet high, which is why very large openings get an awning paired with a fixed window instead.
Replacement windows are custom-made to your existing opening, so we measure every opening at the free in-home estimate and order to fit. That avoids reframing in most homes, even when the openings are not a standard size.
Can an Awning Window Be a Bedroom Egress Window?
Usually not. A top-hinged sash and its hinge arms block part of the opening, so an awning rarely reaches the clear opening the code requires.
The California Residential Code requires a net clear opening of at least 5.7 square feet (5.0 for a grade-floor opening), at least 24 inches high and 20 inches wide, with the sill no more than 44 inches above the floor. For a bedroom, we recommend a casement or a slider. Our California egress window guide explains the rules in detail.
What Are the Downsides of Awning Windows?
Awnings cost more per square foot of glass than a slider and have size and placement limits:
Higher cost for the glass area. The crank operator and hinges cost more than a fixed or sliding unit of the same size.
Screens go inside. Because the sash swings out, the insect screen mounts on the interior.
Wind exposure. An open sash can catch gusts and strain the hinge arms, so close it in storms.
Outward projection. The open sash sticks out over walkways and patios, which matters at head height.
Limited size. An awning will not replace a large living room window on its own.
How Much Do Awning Windows Cost in Sacramento?

Last year, GVD did a complete demolition/remodel of a guest bathroom for me. This year they did a demolition/remodel of a master bathroom suite and a renovation of another guest bathroom. Just getting a contractor to call you back these days seems to be difficult, and our siding job didn't seem to generate much interest from the many companies we contacted. Quality, name brand materials were used throughout the job, and the work quality itself was excellent. Even the city inspector commented on the quality of the workmanship! Last year, GVD did a complete demolition/remodel of a guest bathroom for me. This year they did a demolition/remodel of a master bathroom suite and a renovation of another guest bathroom. GVD transformed the old 1991 bathroom suite with a massive Jacuzzi tub, deteriorating shower, outdated tile, old lighting and plumbing fixtures, clunky cabinets, and worn countertops. It is now a lovely suite with a sleek soaker tub, modern plumbing and light fixtures, beautiful tile, gorgeous cabinets, a wall that is entirely mirror above the sinks, new windows and a new exterior deck door with screen. It has gone from a heavy, over tiled, bulky room to a lovely, light and airy, calm and inviting space. It is actually quite stunning. I can’t adequately describe how thrilled I am with all three of my GVD bathrooms and the entire remodeling experience. From the initial contacts with estimator Gary and design consultant Danielle to project managers Ross and Serge, it has been such a smooth and seamless experience.
