There's nothing like the quaint, cozy appeal of a garden window to bring bliss to your mornings and afternoons.

A flat kitchen window gives you light but no place to put anything. A garden window replaces it with a small glass box that projects from the wall, with a shelf for herbs and vents to let out steam. GVD Renovations & Remodeling measures, orders and installs custom vinyl garden windows across Sacramento and the Bay Area, with a detailed fixed-price proposal before any work starts.

A garden window is a shallow glass box that projects out from an exterior wall, with a glass front, glass sides, a sloped glass roof and a shelf inside. It is also sold as a greenhouse window or kitchen greenhouse window; the name describes the shape, not a separate structure.
Most go over the kitchen sink, where the box adds counter depth, daylight from three directions and a sunny spot for herbs. They also work in a bathroom or breakfast nook where you want light and a display shelf without a large flat window.
Vinyl is the practical frame for a garden window because the box takes more sun and kitchen steam than a flat window. Vinyl never needs painting, does not rot when water splashes from the sink, and the color runs through the material, so scratches do not show bare wood. Cleaning takes soap, water and a soft cloth.
Painted wood garden windows break down faster in Sacramento's triple-digit summers and strong UV, especially on the sloped roof, which faces the sky all day.
As an example of what is available, Anlin's Coronado garden window comes with an adjustable shelf, opening side vents, several low-E glass packages and a Limited Double Lifetime Warranty covering parts, labor and accidental glass breakage, which transfers to the next owner if you sell. We are an Anlin Certified and Authorized Dealer.
Garden windows add light and growing space, but they cost more than a flat window and need attention in summer.
| Advantages | Drawbacks |
|---|---|
| Shelf space for herbs off the counter | A west or south box can warm the kitchen |
| Daylight from front, sides and top | More glass surfaces for condensation |
| Side vents release steam and cooking heat | The projecting roof needs careful flashing |
| Vinyl needs no repainting | Higher cost per opening than a flat window |
All three project from the wall, but a garden window is a shallow box built for plants, while bays and bows are larger and built for seating and views.
| Window type | Shape | Typical room | Holds plants |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garden | Rectangular box, glass roof | Kitchen sink | Yes, on a shelf |
| Bay | Three angled units | Living or dining room | On a deep sill |
| Bow | Four or more units in a curve | Living room, bedroom | On a deep sill |
If you want a window seat or a wide view rather than a growing shelf, compare our bay window installation and bow window installation pages.
A garden window costs more than a flat window of the same width, because it adds a glass roof, glass sides, a shelf and vents, plus extra flashing and support at the wall. Size, projection depth, glass package and frame color set the final number.
For reference, new flat vinyl windows in Sacramento typically run $500 to $600 per window installed; our Sacramento replacement window guide covers those prices. We do not publish one average for garden windows, because a 36-inch unit over a small sink and a 72-inch unit with venting differ widely. After we measure, you get a detailed fixed-price proposal, so the number you approve is the number you pay.
Buying a unit yourself and hiring only labor rarely saves money on a custom opening, because measuring errors and a poor fit become your problem. We quote supply and installation together.
Garden windows are custom-made, so your existing opening sets the size. You choose these at the estimate:
Before installing, we confirm the wall is framed to carry the unit, because a garden window is heavier than a flat window of the same width.
It can, if it faces south or west with clear glass. The box has four glass faces instead of one, and the sloped roof takes direct midday sun.
Three choices keep it comfortable. Pick a low-E glass package with a low solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC), open the side vents on hot afternoons, and favor east or north walls if you have the choice. Check the NFRC label on the exact unit, where a lower U-factor means better insulation and a lower SHGC means less solar heat.
Under California's Title 24 energy code, replacement windows in Sacramento's Climate Zone 12 are limited to a U-factor of 0.27 and an SHGC of 0.23, or 0.40 and 0.35 when you replace 75 square feet of windows or less, which covers most single garden window projects. The federal window tax credit ended for windows placed in service after December 31, 2025, and SMUD does not currently list a residential window rebate, so check SMUD or PG&E for any current offers.
Match plants to the wall the window faces, because a south or west garden window in Sacramento gets intense heat.
| Exposure | Plants that suit it | Light level |
|---|---|---|
| South or west | Rosemary, thyme, aloe | Full sun, hot |
| East | Basil, parsley, chives | Bright morning |
| North | Mint, lemon balm | Soft, indirect |

Whether a garden window needs a permit depends on your city and the scope, so read our guide to window replacement permits. When a permit is required, we handle it.
Each common garden window problem has a specific cause. Fog between the panes means a failed glass seal, which falls under the manufacturer's glass warranty terms. Condensation on the inside of the glass comes from a humid kitchen, so open the vents while you cook. Leaks almost always trace to poor flashing at the roof, which is why installation matters as much as the product.
Wipe the vinyl and glass with soap and water a few times a year, and keep the vent tracks clear of soil and leaves.
A dedicated project manager coordinates your garden window from estimate to walkthrough, and our own crews do the work. If the window is part of a larger kitchen update, we handle remodeling too.
